Who are the Bama Geeks?
The Bama Geeks are four friends from the Birmingham, Alabama, area that were brought together by their love of "Ghostbusters." Brock, Kevin, and Bo met in 2009 at the beginning of the Alabama Ghostbusters franchise and have been close friends ever since. Jessica discovered and joined the ALGB in 2016.
After years of constantly talking about nerdy and geeky pop culture topics, they launched the Bama Geeks Podcast in March 2021. The three guys hosted the ALGB Podcast from 2011-14 and wanted to get back into the medium. Jess agreed, and the journey began.
The Original 'Bama Geek:' A Tribute to Paul Williamson
Bama Geeks was gifted the bamageeks.com domain by the widow of the original "BamaGeek," Paul Williamson, who held the domain name for a long time. Paul was a geek’s geek who grew up in the Birmingham area (Crestwood & Trussville), loving all things space, especially model rockets. He was in the Civil Air Patrol as a teen and enlisted in the Air Force as an air cargo specialist where he taught himself about computers and programming for fun. He became the go-to computer guy in the office automating things long before official systems existed.
The Air Force allowed him to cross train into the computer field, and he was a software developer for the rest of his career being selected for the Ada Reuse Team. He obtained his degree in computer science from Troy University Montgomery and took some graduate computer science engineering classes at Auburn even though he was a huge Bama fan. He was medically retired early, but went back to work for the Air Force as a contractor and civil servant as a software developer and system administrator for several years.
As his health declined, he stopped working, but volunteered his technology skills for the Civil Air Patrol maintaining and helping family and friends with their technology issues. He was a gadget guy who justified buying the latest tech to stay ahead of others (especially his mother-in-law) for support reasons. He probably kept Woot! in business constantly buying up computer parts to be ready to help others. If you needed a spare power supply, computer fan, hard drive, or network card, Paul had you covered.
